The Arenal Volcano National Park is located in the province of Alajuela. The park has as its main attractions the Arenal Volcano and the inactive Volcano Cerro Chato. (The Arenal Volcano has a height of 1,670 meters).
The last activity of the Arenal Volcano was in 1968. Prior to that date the Arenal Volcano was known as Cerro Arenal. But in July of that year the volcano generated an explosion, destroying the towns of Tabacon and Pueblo Nuevo, there were approximately 90 people dead.

The Arenal Volcano National Park has an extensive rainforest, besides a great fauna, among its main species of fauna we can find the tepezcuintle, the tapir; The white-faced monkeys, Congo and Colorado; The coati, sloths and the jaguar.
